I have lots to say. I am not sure I can say it all at once, or even at all. I just returned from a screening and soundtrack performance of my documentary in the very middle of this great country of ours. I traveled via Amtrak to Kansas City and then a Greyhound bus to Lindsborg, 5 hours in the middle of Kansas.
A small town that turns out to have an historic and thriving arts scene and the Birger Sandzen Gallery. One of those famous 20th century artists that was prolific and knew Henry Varnum Poor (more on Poor later and his hometown on his birthday!) and Carl Sandburg (artists from my documentary)
To be asked to come here was an honor and a pretty cool thing to screen my handmade documentary for strangers in the middle of nowhere. I also played some music from the soundtrack, old folk songs that Carl Sandburg collected for the American Songbag project. This project influenced most of the modern folk singers in America from Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan. I have developed a sort of screening/Q&A/Soundtrack performance show with each screening. Sometimes I have had help and other musicians. It really adds to the experience and it gives me a chance to play some songs.
Me as a troubadour and my new Blue Baby. (my other resonator got knocked over by someone and the neck broke!)
The audience was attentive, and pretty big for a place in the middle of nowhere on an NFL Sunday.
I even sold some of my swag. Which is always a good thing! The presentation was great. The trip memorable for many reasons, and the other time spent exploring the area was fascinating. More on that in another post! For now, here is a taste of the weekend!
