I spent the weekend doing self-tape auditions for a couple of potential different clients. One was a fishing app…I fit the target market if I take out the earrings and wipe off the eyeliner…that’s acting however, portraying different people, but more a different part of yourself.
I also recently auditioned twice for the Svengoolie show. I had to create characters and do a 3 minute intro/bit about a movie and some comedy and banter. It was of work, but it was very interesting.
Thats the thing about acting I have discovered over the years doing classes, plays, and films….making a good character comes from within…you are not someone else, you are you, but you are that part of you that maybe you didn’t explore. We all have the ability to become different people, in fact we do as we age….most people don’t feel comfortable exploring the things outside their comfort zone…the things their parents never did….the things they might fear that they would get ridiculed for….
For good or for worse, I have the capacity to look strange and do things outside the ordinary and not really worry about what people think….I guess you call that being comfortable with yourself, but who knows.
I always say I think everyone should take an acting class. It really wakes you up to who you are and who you are to other people. How does my voice sound? How do I carry my body? Sometimes the person we are in our head is way different than what people see or take in. That leads to judgements and stereotypes and why many people feel others don’t really know them.
As an actor though, it is important to touch those parts of yourself so that others can see you peeking out….

Taking one acting class years ago remains most memorable for me to this day!
